Decide by the zone the cabinet lives in. Wherever water is constant, step up to aluminium.

1. Dry zone — board or plywood1. 干区——板材或夹板1. Zon kering — papan atau papan lapis

Bedrooms, living rooms, dry kitchens, pantries, TV walls and office storage stay away from standing water and splash. This is where moisture-resistant board or plywood is the right, cost-effective choice. Plywood is stronger and more stable for tall wardrobes and long runs; board is the standard interior carcass. Areas near a sink, splash-prone runs, or rooms with on-and-off damp sit in between. Upgraded board or plywood can work here only with careful edge sealing and real ventilation. If the exposure is genuine — regular splash, frequent floor washing, constant humidity — step up to aluminium instead of relying on board. 3. Wet zone — aluminium3. 湿区——铝材3. Zon basah — aluminium

Sink bases, wet kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and anywhere with standing water or constant dampness are aluminium zones. No finish turns a wood-based board into a wet-zone board. Aluminium is water-, termite- and corrosion-resistant when it is properly specified, installed and maintained — that qualifier matters; it is not magic.水槽底柜、湿厨房、浴室、洗衣房，以及任何有积水或长期潮湿的地方，都属于铝材区域。没有任何饰面能把木基板材变成适用于湿区的板材。在正确规划、安装和维护的前提下，铝材具有防水、防白蚁和防腐蚀的性能——这个前提很重要；它并非万能。Dasar sinki, dapur basah, bilik mandi, ruang dobi dan mana-mana tempat dengan air bertakung atau kelembapan berterusan adalah zon aluminium. The detailed reasoning

Zone decides which material you use; these technical properties decide how it lives with you day to day — how well it grips a screw and a hinge, whether a knock can be repaired, and how easily a damaged part is swapped. Every ALUMAX carcass is modular, so a single damaged panel or door is replaced without rebuilding the run.

Screw & nail-holding power — Plywood grips fasteners best, on the face and the cut edge alike, so it holds hinges, drawer runners and heavy loads with the least stripping. Moisture-resistant particleboard (P6-type) holds well on the face but is weak on a raw edge; it relies on the right fasteners — confirmat screws, dowels and cam-lock connectors — and on not being over-tightened. Aluminium is never 'nailed': ACP, honeycomb and full-aluminium boxes are screwed or riveted into an aluminium frame, so the holding power comes from the extrusion, not the panel.
Repairability — Plywood is the most forgiving: a stripped screw hole can be re-drilled and a hinge re-fixed, a scuff sanded back. Particleboard takes a filler patch on a small chip, but once it swells from standing water it cannot be restored — that panel is replaced. Aluminium doesn't rot, swell or host termites; a deep scratch or a dent is a panel swap, not a repair.
Replaceability — Because each carcass is built as modules, a single damaged panel, door or drawer front is unclipped and replaced to match, without tearing out the whole cabinet. Keep a note of your material, colour code and hardware so a later replacement lines up.
Weight & strength — Honeycomb aluminium gives the most strength for the least weight; full aluminium is the most robust wet-zone box; plywood is the strongest board for tall wardrobes and long unsupported spans; particleboard is the cost-effective standard for dry, well-supported runs.
Edge & fixing detail — the weak point on any board is the cut edge and the fixing, not the middle of the panel: seal every exposed edge, fix hinges and heavy hardware into plywood or into solid backing, and carry weight into the carcass sides rather than a single screw.

Sarawak heat is a year-round load, not a season. For aluminium framing this means thermal movement, so frames need correct sizing, expansion allowance and proper anchoring. For glass, ask about solar and tinted options that cut heat gain without making the room dark. Termites and damp-loving pests are a real Sarawak factor. Aluminium is termite-resistant because there is no wood for them to feed on, which is one more reason wet and high-risk zones move to aluminium. Wood-based zones carry the risk — most of all where board meets damp: a carcass against a damp external wall, an unventilated base cabinet, or board left in a wet zone it was never meant for.白蚁和喜潮虫害是砂拉越真实存在的因素。铝材防白蚁，因为没有木头可供它们啃食，这也是湿区和高风险区域改用铝材的又一个理由。木基区域则带有风险——尤其是板材遇潮之处：贴着潮湿外墙的柜体、不通风的底柜，或被留在本不该用它的湿区里的板材。Anai-anai dan perosak yang gemar kelembapan adalah faktor Sarawak yang sebenar. Fact ELS field guidance: Moisture-resistant board resists humidity, but it is not waterproof.

Plywood vs particleboard
