Where Should the Hob and Hood Go?

A centred hob looks balanced on a plan — and if the hood can't extract from there, or a draught crosses the flame, the looks cost you the cooking. The hob's position is set by extraction, landing worktop and clearances first. Here is what a designer checks before the hob is centred on anything.

The dilemma抉择Dilema

Centre the hob for looks, or place it for heat, extraction and landing space?

Put the hob in the middle — it looks balanced.

Where can the extraction run, is there worktop to land a hot pan, and what's beside and above the heat?

Every choice below is tested the same way — the six questions a designer runs before appearance is even discussed.下面每个选择都以同样方式检验——设计师在谈外观之前会先问的六个问题。Setiap pilihan di bawah diuji dengan cara yang sama — enam soalan yang pereka tanya sebelum penampilan pun dibincangkan.

What a designer checks设计师会检查什么Apa yang pereka semak Design recommendation

  • Extraction route — can the hood duct to outside from here? (RISK)
  • Landing worktop — is there space each side of the hob for a hot pan? (USE)
  • Heat beside a tall cabinet or fridge — keep clearance. (RISK)
  • Window / opening conflict — a draught across a flame is a real issue. (RISK)
  • Hood width vs hob, and pot-handle clearance to the walkway. (SPACE)

The options各个选项Pilihan

Designer's-eye score, out of 5 — more is better on every row. Cost is scored as value, so a cheaper, simpler option can out-score a premium one.

Hob under / near a window

For the view
  • Light and a view while you cook
  • Extraction to outside is hard from a window wall
  • An opening window beside a hob is a ventilation and flame issue
  • Curtains, blinds and heat don't mix

Best for最适合Sesuai untuk Rarely ideal — reconsider unless extraction and safety are genuinely solved.

Hob on a solid wall + extraction + landing

The workhorse
  • The hood extracts properly
  • Landing worktop on both sides for hot pans
  • Clearance from tall cabinets and the walkway
  • Less of a 'view' moment while cooking

Best for最适合Sesuai untuk Most kitchens — the safe, workable default.

Hob on the island

Only with services
  • Social — you face the room while cooking
  • Frees the perimeter for other work
  • Needs a dedicated circuit and island extraction
  • Grease and heat over a seating island
  • The most services and site checks

Best for最适合Sesuai untuk Open-plan kitchens where a dedicated circuit and island extraction are genuinely possible.

Common mistake常见错误Kesilapan biasa

What goes wrong问题出在哪Apa yang jadi salah

A hob centred under the window for the view — nowhere sensible for the hood to extract, and a draught across the flame.

The fix正确做法Cara betul

The hob on a wall that lets the hood extract properly, with landing worktop each side and clearance from the tall cabinets.

Extraction, landing space and clearances first; the view comes after they're solved — not before.

ELS Design RuleELS 设计准则Peraturan Reka Bentuk ELS ELS field guidance

Place the hob where the hood can extract properly and there's landing worktop on both sides, clear of tall cabinets and walkway pot-handles — then worry about the view. An opening window directly beside a hob is a ventilation and safety question, not just a style one.

When we change the default何时改变预设做法Bila kami ubah pilihan lalai

We put a hob on the island only where a dedicated circuit and island extraction are genuinely possible; otherwise the hob stays on the wall.

Cost consequence成本后果Akibat kos

Extraction routing and a dedicated circuit are appointed-trade work, confirmed on site — not a cabinet charge.

Plan it

This is a design decision — plan it with ELS

Layout and function are decided before the cabinets are priced: ELS resolves the arrangement, then ALUMAX products populate it.

These decisions compound — layout drives storage, storage drives hardware, and services tie it all together. ELS by ALUMAX coordinates the whole specification before anything is built, so the decisions hold together as one kitchen.
