Layout & space · Dilemma 02

Do You Really Have Space for a Kitchen Island?

An island is the object everyone pictures — but it is really a space decision. Before it earns its place, a designer subtracts the walkway, the stool clearance, the appliance-door swing and any power, water or hob it needs, then looks at what remains. This is how to tell whether your room has room for an island, how big it should be, and what job it should actually do.

The dilemma抉择Dilema

Island, or no island?

After the island and the walkway, seating, appliance doors and any services it needs — what is actually left?

The same kitchen four times — no island, a compact island, a standard island, and one sized to the worktop you wanted instead of the walkway you need. Watch the walking space, not the island.

Quick answer快速解答Jawapan pantas

Best when适合当Sesuai apabila

There is a comfortable walkway (a metre-ish) left on every side a person works from, after the island is in.

Avoid when避免当Elak apabila

The only way to fit an island is to drop below a comfortable walkway on any working side, or block an appliance door.

What a designer checks设计师会检查什么Apa yang pereka semak Design recommendation

  • Room width and length — is there a genuine metre-ish walkway left on every working side once the island is in? (SPACE)
  • Appliance doors — can the oven, dishwasher and fridge still open fully without clashing the island? (SPACE)
  • Seating — if stools go under it, is there knee space plus a walkway behind someone seated? (USE)
  • The job — is this island for prep, storage, seating, a sink or a hob? Each has very different consequences. (USE)
  • Services — does it need power, water or a hob? That pulls in an M&E route, falls, a circuit or extraction. (RISK)
  • Value — does the island earn its cost, or would a longer perimeter run give more worktop for less? (COST)

The options各个选项Pilihan

Designer's-eye score, out of 5 — more is better on every row. Cost is scored as value, so a cheaper, simpler option can out-score a premium one.

No island

Keep the walkways
  • Maximum circulation — the floor stays open and flexible
  • The cheapest and most forgiving option
  • Nothing to route power or water to
  • No extra prep surface or casual seating in the middle
  • The 'social kitchen' look people picture is missing

Best for最适合Sesuai untuk Galley, single-wall and any kitchen under roughly 3 m clear in one direction.

Compact island (~1500 mm)

Prep + a little storage
  • Fits rooms a full island would choke
  • Adds a real prep surface and some storage
  • Keeps walkways honest if the room is tight
  • Limited seating — one or two stools at most
  • Gets tight fast if you add a sink or hob

Best for最适合Sesuai untuk Rooms around 3 m where a full island would eat the walkway.

Standard island (~1800 mm)

Prep + seating + storage
  • A genuine second worktop, casual seating and real storage
  • The social centre most people actually want
  • Room for a sink or hob if the services allow
  • Needs true clearance on every side — not every room has it
  • Services (sink/hob) add M&E, falls and extraction

Best for最适合Sesuai untuk Open-plan kitchens with clearance to spare on all sides.

Oversized island

The classic mistake
  • Looks generous in a showroom or a plan drawing
  • Circulation, seating and appliance access all suffer at once
  • You reach across it instead of around it
  • Pays for a slab you then have to squeeze past

Best for最适合Sesuai untuk Almost nothing — it is what happens when the island is sized from the worktop you wanted, not the walkway you need.

Common mistake常见错误Kesilapan biasa

too tightIsland crammed inroom to passClear walkway
Same room, same island footprint — the only change is which number was decided first: the slab, or the walkway.
What goes wrong问题出在哪Apa yang jadi salah

Island sized to the worktop you want — doors that clash, a squeezed aisle, and stools with nowhere to sit back.

The fix正确做法Cara betul

Island sized from the clearances first; the worktop is simply whatever is left after a comfortable walkway on every working side.

ELS Design RuleELS 设计准则Peraturan Reka Bentuk ELS ELS field guidance

Add an island only when a comfortable walkway survives on every side a person works from — then size the island from the space that is left, never the other way round.

When we change the default何时改变预设做法Bila kami ubah pilihan lalai

We add services (power, a sink or a hob) only when the room can carry the M&E route, the falls and the extraction. If it can't, the island stays a prep-and-storage block, which is often the better kitchen anyway.

Cost consequence成本后果Akibat kos

An island is priced separately from the kitchen — the cabinet by the foot, the top, and any waterfall ends — while power, water or a hob is an appointed-trade allowance confirmed on site, not a cabinet charge.

Layout and function are decided before the cabinets are priced: ELS resolves the arrangement, then ALUMAX products populate it.

These decisions compound — layout drives storage, storage drives hardware, and services tie it all together. ELS by ALUMAX coordinates the whole specification before anything is built, so the decisions hold together as one kitchen.
