Plan a bedroom as a system, not just a wardrobe

A good bedroom is a working environment, not a box with a wardrobe in it. Plan it as a system — how it is used, where the bed and storage sit, the light, the air, the power, the openings and the upkeep — and the wardrobe becomes one honest decision among many, each in its right place.

Plan a bedroom as a system, not just a wardrobe

A bedroom is a system, not a wardrobe

Most cabinet websites stop at “what material is the wardrobe”. That is one decision out of two dozen. A bedroom has to work on a hot night with the fan and the air-conditioner running, through the early tropical sunrise, with your phone charging by the bed and the monsoon against the window. Plan the whole environment and every choice — including the wardrobe — falls into place.

How to use this

Work down the layers below in order. Each names the decision, gives honest guidance for a Sarawak home, and shows who handles it — what ALUMAX supplies and installs, what ELS coordinates with the other trades, and what stays your own choice. Nothing here is priced; take the shortlist to a free measurement and an approved drawing.

Purpose & people

Room purposeYour choice

What must the room do beyond sleep?

List every job the room carries — rest, dressing, storage, and perhaps a quiet work corner or space for night feeds. Naming each job early turns it into a clear zone later, instead of furniture squeezed in after the walls are up.

UsersYour choice

Who uses the room, and for how long?

A couple, a growing child, or an elderly parent each need different clearances, storage heights and lighting. Note who sleeps here now and how the room should adapt over the next few years, so the plan does not date quickly.

CirculationYour choice

Which way does the door swing, and where are the walkways?

As general guidance, keep a walking gap of roughly 600-700mm along the bed and in front of the wardrobe so drawers and doors can open fully. Check that the door swings into clear space, not against a wardrobe front or the foot of the bed.

Sleep & storage

Bed positionYour choice

Which wall takes the headboard, and clearance each side?

Set the headboard against a solid wall away from the door swing and the window draught, and keep a walkway of roughly 600-700mm on each side you actually use. Position the bed clear of the ceiling-fan downdraught and the split-AC airflow so you are not sleeping in the cold stream, and make sure the door never opens onto the foot of the bed.

Wardrobe & doorsALUMAX supplies & installs

Swing doors, sliding doors, or an open walk-in?

In a tight room, sliding doors need no swing clearance so the walkway stays free, while swing doors show the whole wardrobe at a glance but need floor space to open fully. Aluminium-framed cabinetry stands up to the humidity and resists the swelling and warping that a damp room can cause in chipboard, and an open walk-in only suits a room with the space and airflow to keep clothes from turning damp.

Seasonal storageALUMAX supplies & installs

Where do suitcases and off-season bedding live?

Carry the wardrobe up to the ceiling with a top-box for luggage and seasonal bedding rather than leaving an open dust gap above it. Keep bulky items you reach for rarely in under-bed storage or a small box room, and store anything low up off a floor that can get damp in the monsoon months.

Dressing & mirrorCoordinated by ELS

Where does the mirror sit, and how is it lit?

Place the mirror where you can step back for a full-length view with some daylight nearby, and plan a dedicated dressing light with your electrician so it falls on your face from the front rather than casting a shadow from overhead. A full-length mirror can sit on a wardrobe door to save space; leave clear room for a dressing bench or stool you choose yourself.

Light

Natural lightALUMAX supplies & installs

Which way do the windows face, and how big?

In Sarawak an east-facing window brings bright early sun that can glare on a TV or phone screen, while a west-facing one brings harsh afternoon heat. Size and place the window for cross-ventilation, and pair strong morning sun with a proper blackout layer.

Artificial lightingCoordinated by ELS

Which light layers — ceiling, bedside, wardrobe — and what warmth?

Plan three layers on separate switches: a soft ambient ceiling light, a bedside or reading task light, and a wardrobe or dressing light. Choose a warm colour temperature (around 2700-3000K) so the room feels restful rather than office-bright.

BlackoutYour choice

Curtain or blind to block the early sunrise?

Sarawak's sun rises early, so a blackout layer matters for light sleepers and shift workers. Blackout curtains give full, soft coverage; blinds look tidy but can leak light at the edges unless fitted with side channels.

Climate & air

Air-conditioningCoordinated by ELS

Where to mount the split unit, and which way does it throw?

Position the indoor unit so its airflow runs along the length of the bed rather than down onto the pillows — a cold draught on your head through the night disrupts sleep and can dry out your sinuses. Avoid mounting it directly above or facing straight at the headboard.

Ceiling fanCoordinated by ELS

Ceiling fan and AC working together, clear of any bulkhead?

Centre the fan over the bed with the blades clear of any low bulkhead or dropped ceiling, so they spin freely and don't chop the light. Running the fan on a low speed alongside the AC circulates cool air more evenly, which usually lets you set a milder temperature.

VentilationALUMAX supplies & installs

How does the room breathe when the AC is off?

Plan a cross-ventilation path — openable windows with insect screens on opposing or adjacent walls let air move through and stop humidity settling into damp and mould. Being able to air the room out when the AC is off helps protect the mattress, any timber and stored clothing.

Power & data

Bedside sockets & switchesCoordinated by ELS

A socket each side and a two-way switch by the bed?

Plan a socket on each side of the bed at a height you can reach while lying down, and wire the main light on a two-way switch so it turns off from both the door and the bed. Fix sides, heights and switch positions before the walls are closed up.

ChargingCoordinated by ELS

Where do phones and devices actually charge overnight?

Add USB or phone-charging points where devices really live — the bedside, a dresser or a desk — so cables don't trail across the room. Map your real charging spots before the socket layout is finalised.

Data & WiFiCoordinated by ELS

Does the router or access point reach the bed, desk and TV?

Check WiFi reach from wherever the router or access point sits, and run a wired data point to a desk or wall-mounted TV if you use one. Sort cabling routes early, since they are hard to add once the room is finished.

Envelope & openings

FlooringALUMAX supplies & installs

What goes underfoot — comfort, moisture, easy cleaning?

SPC flooring gives a warm, quiet, water-resistant surface that suits Sarawak's humidity and wipes clean easily. Laid over a level screed, it avoids the swelling that can affect timber laminate in damp bedrooms.

WallsCoordinated by ELS

Plain or feature headboard wall, and where to fix shelves and TV?

Settle the headboard wall and any TV or shelf positions early, so power and data can be run to the right spots and the finish chosen to suit. A panelled or joinery headboard can be built in as cabinetry if you want a warmer feature.

CeilingCoordinated by ELS

Plain ceiling or a bulkhead for cove light and AC trunking?

A bulkhead can conceal split-AC pipework and carry a cove light; plan it around the bed and fan. Keep the fan on a long enough down-rod for good airflow, and set the AC so it does not blow straight onto the pillows.

Door & lockCoordinated by ELS

Which door leaf and privacy lockset for the bedroom?

A solid or solid-core leaf with a privacy (thumb-turn) lockset gives better sound and a proper lock than a hollow door. Check the swing direction and clearance so it does not clash with the wardrobe or bed.

WindowsTingkapALUMAX supplies & installs

Which aluminium window type for rain, security and light?

Aluminium windows stand up to Sarawak's humidity and monsoon rain and take toughened glass for added security. Casement or top-hung sashes can shed rain while open for airflow, while sliding sashes suit tight spaces beside a bed.

Insect screenALUMAX supplies & installs

How to keep insects out while windows stay open?

An insect screen is essential here so windows can stay open for airflow without letting mosquitoes and other insects in. Match the screen type — fixed, sliding or roller — to how each window opens.

Curtains & blindsYour choice

Curtains, blinds or both — and how much blackout?

Leave stack space beside the window so open curtains clear the glass and do not block airflow or the screen. A blackout lining or blind helps with bright mornings and shift sleep, and a ceiling-fixed track gives a cleaner line than a rod.

Sound & privacyCoordinated by ELS

How much quiet — between rooms and from outside?

Most bedroom noise travels through the door gaps and the window, so a solid door with seals and well-sealed glazing make the biggest difference. Placing the wardrobe against a shared wall also adds a buffer between adjoining rooms.

Living with it

SecurityKeselamatanALUMAX supplies & installs

Secure a ground-floor window and bedroom door?

On a ground-floor or easily reached bedroom, an aluminium grille or a lockable window lets you sleep with it open for airflow while staying protected. Pair this with a solid door lock, and keep at least one window operable from the inside so the room still has a fire escape.

Maintenance & cleaningALUMAX supplies & installs

Which finishes and ventilation resist humidity and mould?

In our humid climate, favour wipe-clean wardrobe surfaces and let the carcass breathe — a vented back or small wall gap helps stop trapped damp and mould. Keep everyday shelves and rails within easy reach so high or deep corners don't become dust traps you quietly avoid cleaning.

Cost成本KosYour choice

Where to spend versus where to save?

Spend where daily contact and humidity are hardest — wardrobe internals, hardware, and the door and window that must keep opening smoothly for years — and save on loose, swappable items like curtains and bedding. Adding grilles, better locks or extra vented cabinetry moves the budget up, so settle these before the quote rather than as an afterthought.

Key takeaways核心要点

  • A bedroom is an environmental system — the wardrobe is one layer, not the whole job.
  • Plan the air first: keep the air-conditioner from blowing straight onto the bed, and give the room a path to breathe.
  • Get the bedside power, light switching and blackout right — they are felt every single day.
  • ALUMAX supplies the cabinetry, aluminium doors, windows, screens and flooring; ELS coordinates the electrical, lighting and air-conditioning as one project.
