Colour rarely drifts because one panel is "wrong" — it drifts because different runs, dye-lots and materials read differently under real light. Control it with a frozen master reference, batch discipline, and a consistent inspection light before anything is installed.

Why colour drifts in the first place

A single approved colour is not a single physical thing across a job. Laminates and foils are printed and pressed in dye-lots; painted and lacquered panels are mixed, sprayed and cured in separate runs; and each of those steps carries small, legitimate variation. Add different substrates — a laminate front beside a painted end panel — and the same nominal colour will scatter, absorb and gloss differently, so two 'matching' surfaces read as two colours side by side. Expect drift as the default, then design a process to hold it, rather than assuming one sign-off fixes the colour forever.

Set a master reference sample — and freeze it

Colour approval must resolve to one physical object, not a name, a code, or a screen. Approve a real sample in the actual material and finish, mark it as the master reference, and record who approved it and when. That master becomes the thing every later run is judged against, and it is part of the frozen specification that carries from prototype into bulk production. Keep it protected from light and handling so the reference itself does not fade or yellow and quietly move the target.

Control by batch and dye-lot

Once the master is fixed, the risk moves to how the job is produced and sequenced. Where you can, keep visually adjacent surfaces — a run of doors, a wall of fronts — within the same batch or dye-lot so any residual variation falls between zones rather than across a single eyeline. Record the batch or dye-lot against each production run so a later replacement or snag piece can be matched to the right lot, not just the right colour name. If a job spans more than one lot, agree in writing where the seams are allowed to fall.

ΔE: name the difference, don't guess it

ΔE (delta-E) is the standard way to express how far two colours differ as a single measured number rather than an argument about opinion. Use it as the shared language between you, ELS and the production partner: agree that colour difference will be measured, against the master, under a defined method — and agree the acceptable limit in writing before production, rather than discovering the threshold during a dispute. The value is that it turns 'that looks off' into something objective and testable; do not adopt an invented pass/fail figure, set the limit deliberately for the job and hold production to it.

Inspect under consistent light before install

Light is the most common reason a 'matching' batch fails on site: a colour that agrees under warm workshop light can split under cool daylight or LED, a shift called metamerism. Inspect incoming panels against the master under one agreed, consistent light source before anything is fitted, and view surfaces in the orientation and proximity they will actually have. Reject and re-match at the inspection bench, where a swap is cheap — not after the run is installed and the mismatch is framed permanently on the wall. Bringing forward the check is the single highest-leverage habit in the whole process.
