A drawing tells production what to aim for; an approved mock-up tells them exactly what "right" looks like at full scale, in real light, with real hardware in the hand. Treat the mock-up room as the master reference: once it is signed off, every production room is judged against this room, and any deviation is a defect. Walk the room the way a guest and a fitter both will. Check reveals, shadow gaps and alignment where cabinetry meets wall, skirting, ceiling and the bathroom threshold — hospitality repeats every imperfection hundreds of times. Confirm the finish colour and sheen under the room's actual lighting, not showroom light, and record the finish sample and batch reference so later dye-lots can be checked against it for colour difference (ΔE) rather than judged by eye. Hospitality hardware is operated constantly, so feel and durability are part of the spec, not a detail. Open and close every door and drawer, test soft-close, handle feel and the wobble-free seating of hinges, and confirm fixings are the stainless grade specified for the zone (SS304, stepping up to SS316 where salt or constant moisture applies). In the bathroom and any sink or laundry run, confirm the material family steps up correctly — wood-based boards give way to ACP or full aluminium in wet zones, because moisture-resistant is never waterproof. A guest room is a working room, so approve it as an operator, not only as a designer. Have housekeeping actually clean it — can surfaces be wiped without catching seams, can the space under and behind units be reached, do finishes survive the cleaning chemicals in daily use. Check maintenance access to plumbing, sockets and any serviceable fitting, and confirm that a damaged panel or a worn drawer can be swapped without rebuilding the joinery. An unrecorded approval is worthless six months and two hundred rooms later. Photograph the approved room comprehensively — every elevation, junction, hardware detail and wet-zone step-up — and date each image. Log the finish samples, hardware references and the agreed tolerances alongside the photos, and have the client, ELS and ALUMAX all reference the same signed record.
