Modular, Factory-Custom or On-Site Custom Cabinets?
Cabinets are made one of three ways — as standardised modules assembled to fit, cut to your drawing in a factory, or built in place by carpenters — and the choice sets more than the price. It decides how custom you can be, what tends to go wrong, and the part almost nobody asks about: how fast you can put it right when a unit is damaged, wrong or doesn't fit. Three ways to make a cabinet — and why "where it's made" decides everything
Every cabinet you can buy is made one of three ways, and the real difference isn't the look — a good example of any of them can look identical on day one. The difference is where the work happens, and how much is fixed before your room is even measured. That single fact drives how custom the result can be, what tends to go wrong, and how quickly it can be recovered. Read them as a ladder from most standardised to most bespoke. None is simply "better" — each is the right answer for a different room, budget and appetite for risk.

Modular — fast, consistent, and the easiest to put right
Modular cabinets are standardised boxes made at scale in a factory, in a fixed set of sizes, then assembled and installed to fit your room. Because the units are repeatable, the price is the lowest of the three and the build quality is the most consistent — every box comes off the same jig. The trade is flexibility: the run is planned to standard increments, and the gaps at the ends and around obstacles are closed with filler panels rather than a made-to-measure unit. Factory custom-made — any size, factory precision, a drawing on record
Factory custom-made cabinets are cut to your own measurements and an approved drawing, produced in the factory off-site, then delivered and installed. You keep factory precision and quality control, but without the fixed-size limit of modular — any width, any material, including the aluminium composite and honeycomb that belong in wet zones. The cost is that the lead time is front-loaded: nothing is cut until the site is measured and the drawing is signed off, and a change after sign-off means re-fabrication. This is ALUMAX's made-to-spec range — Signature, wet-zone and bespoke.

On-site custom-made cabinets are built in place by carpenters, cut on your site to whatever the room throws at them. It is the most freeform of the three — a skilled carpenter can adapt to any wall quirk on the fly — and it is the traditional method. But without a factory jig, the finish and tolerance depend entirely on the individual; the work is dusty and disruptive because it happens inside your home; and there is no spec on record to reproduce. It is the method a factory approach is built to replace — on precision, on cleanliness, and above all on recoverability.
- Constraints: depends on the individual carpenter's availability and skill; dust, mess and disruption run through the whole build because it happens on site; a slower on-site pace; materials limited to what the carpenter sources.

Everyone compares cabinets on price and looks. Almost nobody asks the question that decides how a bad day plays out: when a unit is damaged, wrong or doesn't fit, how long — and how certainly — can you get it put right? That is recovery lead time, and it tracks exactly where the cabinet was made. The reason is simple. Recovery means reproducing the thing that failed, and how fast you can reproduce it depends on what you have to work from — a stocked standard part, a drawing on file, or nothing but the original carpenter's hands.
