Plywood vs ACP vs honeycomb for commercial projects

On a commercial project you rarely want one material throughout — you want the right material in each moisture zone. Plywood, ACP and honeycomb aluminium each earn their place by zone, weight and how the panel behaves over a large flat run.

Match the section to the zone: board cores for dry rooms, aluminium cores where water lives. Zone the project before you pick a material

In Sarawak's heat and humidity, failure starts at the wettest point of a room, not the average of it. Walk the drawings and mark each run as dry, semi-wet or wet: dry cabinetry away from water, semi-wet near splashes and damp external walls, wet at sinks, wash-up, bathrooms, laundry and pantry backs. Specify to the worst zone a panel touches, not to the room label. This is why a single hotel bathroom vanity and its adjacent dry wardrobe can — and should — be two different materials.

Where each material belongs

Plywood is the upgraded wood option for dry and semi-wet joinery: strong, screw-holding, easy to detail, but still timber and therefore never a wet-zone answer. ACP (aluminium composite panel) is the wet-zone workhorse — a non-wood face that shrugs off splashes; the glass-finished front variant is marketed as AquaGlass, but specify it as ACP. Honeycomb aluminium is for large, flat, stable panels — tall doors, wide shopfronts, feature walls — where you want a rigid face that stays flat and light, and full aluminium is reserved for the wettest, heavy-duty runs.

  • Dry / semi-wet joinery, needs screw-holding and easy detailing → plywood

Weight, durability and maintenance

Weight decides your carcass, hinges, wall fixings and how two installers actually lift a panel — honeycomb aluminium gives you a large face for far less mass than a solid board, which matters on tall doors and site handling. On durability, remember the honest line: non-wood wet-zone panels are moisture-resistant, never waterproof, so edges, cut-outs and fixings still need sealing and the right stainless fixings (SS304, or SS316 where salt or constant damp is in play). For maintenance, wipe-clean non-wood faces suit high-traffic commercial rooms; plywood needs its edges and finish kept intact to keep water out.

Cost, lead time and repairability trade-offs

Treat cost as a whole-life figure, not a per-panel one: the cheapest board in a wet zone is the most expensive once it swells and gets replaced mid-operation. Lead time shifts with the finish and the production engine, so confirm it in writing per material rather than assuming one date for the whole job. Repairability differs too — a modular plywood unit or a standard ACP door can often be swapped as a like-for-like part, whereas a bonded feature panel is a bigger intervention. Agree upfront how each element gets repaired or replaced, because a hotel or shop cannot close a floor to fix one cabinet.

Freeze one prototype, then repeat it across the development

The commercial advantage is repeatability. Design one unit, approve a real prototype, freeze the specification — material, finish, tolerances, fixings, edge treatment — then run bulk production and batch delivery against that frozen package. Hold finish consistency to a named colour-difference check (the ΔE concept) across dye-lots so panel two hundred matches panel one, and agree tolerances in writing rather than discovering them on site.
