Standardized platforms and made-to-spec cabinetry are not rivals — they are two production engines for different problems. The professional's job is to route each part of a project to the right one, and to know where they must be mixed.

Two engines, one specification owner

When made-to-spec is required
Made-to-spec earns its cost when the zone or the design demands something the library cannot repeat. Wet and semi-wet zones that must step up to non-wood materials — ACP fronts, honeycomb or full aluminium — frequently fall here, as do awkward geometries, non-standard heights, integrated appliances, and feature pieces that carry the design intent. You are buying flexibility and material freedom, and paying for it in lead time and price. Specify it where it changes the outcome, not everywhere.

Standardized pulls cost and lead time down and repeatability up, at the price of flexibility; made-to-spec inverts that. The most expensive mistake is forcing a bespoke solution onto something that repeats, or forcing a standard module into a zone that needed a different material. Match the engine to the actual constraint of each run.

Mixing both in one project

Keep a single specification, one set of finishes and one QC standard across both so the join between them is invisible on site. Freeze once, then repeat
When a made-to-spec unit will recur — a repeated bathroom, a kitchen type across an estate — treat the first one as a prototype, not a final. Approve a real prototype, freeze the specification in writing, and only then commit to bulk production and batch delivery. Agree tolerances, finishes and the colour-difference (ΔE) expectation between batches up front and hold production to them. A frozen, approved package is what turns a one-off into a repeatable production run without re-litigating the design on every unit.
